The Master of Melee
Starting off on my list is arguable one of the most powerful characters in the game. Doomfist, also known by his real name, Akande Ogundimu, is an extremely strong DPS character whose most notable attribute is his huge robotic fist which allows him to cause absolute mayhem. In the lore of the game, he is known as an avid martial artist, as well as a reputable CEO of a cybernetic prosthetics company. However, after losing one of his arms during the Omnic war mentioned in the Overwatch story, and gaining possession of the Doomfist gauntlet, he became a force to reckon with, and his true strength was shown when he was able to defeat two of three Overwatch foundation members sent from a strike team to take him down (Tracer, Genji and Winston, three of the most powerful members).
Abilities
Doomfist has four main abilities; Rocket Punch, Rising Uppercut, Seismic Slam,
and his ultimate, Meteor Strike. Rocket Punch causes Doomfist to charge up a large punch and spring forward when it is released, stunning any enemies in the process as well as dealing up to 150 damage. Rising Uppercut causes him to thrust upward, bringing with him any enemy within his forward range if they are close enough, effectively stunning them in the process and dealing 50 damage. Seismic Slam causes him to lunge toward the ground if he is already airborne, stunning and causing between 42 and 150 damage depending on his air time. Meteor Strike causes him to launch into the sky, then come crashing down to a targeted area, dealing up to 300 damage to enemies within the radius of his target.
The Physics
For the physics aspect, information will only be collected for the Rocket Punch ability as well as Meteor Strike. Most of the information was collected from The Game Theorists on YouTube, with some from personal calculations done by myself.
Rocket Punch
Rocket Punch can be observed to be a powerful ability, but in reality, it seems impossible. With a basic velocity calculation being the starting point of the calculations, Doomfist lunges forward 20 metres in 0.2 seconds, meaning that his velocity is 100 m/s, and he reaches this velocity nearly instantly. Moving further into the details of the ability, the force needed to make the ability work can be found by introducing a second body of mass, the character Roadhog, since his mass is a known value (249 kg as stated in the lore). When Roadhog is impacted by Doomfist’s punch, he flies back 10 metres in a very small 10/53 seconds, or at 53 m/s. Since the test was conducted on the map Lijang Tower, where the floor is primarily cobblestone, the coefficient of friction between cobblestone and Roadhog (human skin with his mass) would be μf=0.85 and μk=0.8. Accounting for these factors, Doomfist would be applying about 300 kN of force to Roadhog through his Rocket Punch. That amount of force applied in one concentrated spot would cause Doomfist’s fist to have potentially launch straight through Roadhog.
Meteor Strike
To determine how fast Doomfist slams into the ground, height is needed. Since Doomfist is roughly the same height as Roadhog, at 2.2 metres, Doomfist would be hitting the ground at 46 m/s. When Doomfist hits the ground and Roadhog is within the radius of his strike, he gets launched back 8 metres in 0.25 seconds, 32 m/s. The force required to make this happen is about 212 kN, meaning that this is the amount of force that Doomfist imparts into the ground. Realistically, when this happens, Doomfist would release 139 kJ of energy, creating a crater the size of one at the site of an actual meteor strike. The sound produced by the strike would be about 150 dB, meaning anyone within 100 metres of the strike would be at risk of losing their hearing. This is a great explanation as to why Doomfist has ear protection on him.
